The Wonder of “What If?”: Letting Curiosity Lead the Way

Two words. That’s all it takes to shift the way you’re looking at your life.

What if?

Not as a source of anxiety โ€” we all know that version. What if this goes wrong. What if I regret this. What if everyone judges me. That version of “what if” keeps you frozen, running worst-case scenarios on a loop.

I’m talking about the other version. The curious one. What if this actually works out. What if I’m stronger than I think. What if there’s a version of my life I haven’t even considered yet.

Same two words. Completely different direction.

Why curiosity feels risky when you’re stuck

When you’ve been sitting with a big decision for a long time โ€” asking yourself the same question over and over without an answer โ€” curiosity can feel like a luxury you don’t have room for. You want certainty. You want to know, not wonder.

Here’s the thing, though: certainty rarely arrives first. Curiosity is usually what gets you there.

Think about it. You can’t make a clear decision about a future you’ve never let yourself imagine. If you’ve spent years only thinking about what you’re afraid of, you haven’t actually explored what’s possible. Curiosity is what opens that door. Not recklessness. Not naivety. Just genuine, honest wondering.

What “what if” can do for you right now

Try asking yourself a few real “what if” questions โ€” not to solve anything today, just to see what shows up.

What if I gave myself permission to actually want something, instead of just avoiding what I don’t want?

What if the life I’m afraid of isn’t the only other option?

What if I’m not as stuck as I feel โ€” I just haven’t asked myself the right questions yet?

What if clarity doesn’t require certainty first? What if it’s the other way around?

None of these questions demand an answer today. They’re not decisions. They’re doors. And sometimes just opening a door โ€” even without walking through it yet โ€” changes how a room feels.

Curiosity as a muscle, not a personality trait

Some women tell me they’re just not “curious people.” I don’t think that’s true. I think curiosity gets buried under years of managing, coping, and surviving. It’s still there. It just hasn’t had room to breathe.

The good news is that curiosity is a muscle. You can rebuild it in small ways. Ask yourself one “what if” question a day, even a silly one. Notice something you’d normally walk past. Wonder about something instead of assuming you already know the answer.

Over time, that small habit starts to change something bigger. You start approaching your own big question โ€” do I stay or do I go โ€” less like a trap you’re stuck in and more like something you’re genuinely exploring.

That shift matters more than it sounds.
